Actually Josh, you don't have to have a google account to comment. Just choose Nickname. Then you can enter your name and a link to your website if you want. As you can see the link goes to my blog not to my profile. Or you can comment as anonymous. There's a way to set it so only people who have google account can comment. That's probably what your mom did on your family blog.
Actually the link didn't work at all. I'm not sure why. But anyway you can still comment without a google account.
